History
Historical evidence shows that the area making up Bolivia has been occupied continuously for the last 2000 years. The continuous occupation began with the arrival of the Aymara in what is now western Bolivia, northern Chile and southern Peru. The Aymara themselves believe they are linked to the Tiwanaku civilization in western Bolivia.
Tiwanaku dates as far back as 1200 BC. It began as a village based on agriculture. By AD 600 to AD 800, the site had reached urban proportions. It would go on to become a power in the Andes. At its height, the city spanned 6.5 sq km with 15,000 to 30,000 inhabitants.
But use of satellite imagery has indicated the site was capable of handling up to 1.4 million people. By AD 400, Tiwanaku would go on to conquer the other cities nearby. But rather than destroy the cultures, it would absorb them. In AD 1000, Tiwanaku suddenly collapsed as it became deserted.
